Community Leadership in Action. The Promotora Model

Local leaders. Trusted voices. Culturally rooted solutions for Northern Colorado families.

The Heart of Our Work

What is the Promotora Model?

The Promotora Model is the heart of Cultivando’s work in Northern Colorado. Promotoras are trusted community members trained to provide culturally responsive education, resources, and support to their neighbors. Rooted in the belief that the best solutions come from within the community itself, Promotoras serve as bridges between families and vital health, education, and social services.

Since our founding, the Promotora Model has empowered hundreds of local leaders — primarily Latinas and members of immigrant communities — to address health equity, early childhood development, environmental justice, and community well-being in ways that are accessible, respectful, and effective.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Who Promotoras Are

Promotoras are more than health educators — they are community leaders, neighbors, mothers, and advocates who share the same lived experiences as the families they serve. Guided by the principle of In Lak’ech (“I am you, and you are me”), Promotoras bring cultural insight, authenticity, and deep trust into every interaction.

They receive comprehensive training in leadership, facilitation, public speaking, and culturally grounded health and advocacy topics. This preparation allows them to facilitate workshops, conduct outreach, connect families to resources, and amplify community voices in local decision-making processes.

“Promotoras are not just service providers — they are agents of systemic change who help build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods for current and future generations.”

Looking Ahead

What We’re Working Toward

We envision Northern Colorado where every community has strong, confident leaders equipped to create positive change from within. Through the Promotora Model, we cultivate leadership that is culturally rooted, sustainable, and focused on long-term health equity, environmental justice, and family well-being.

Built on Three Foundations

How the Promotora Model Works

We lead with trust, cultural responsiveness, and genuine partnership. Promotoras participate in ongoing training and receive continued mentorship so they can confidently facilitate workshops, advocate for policy improvements, and connect families to essential services.

  • Trust-Building: authentic relationships based on shared experience and mutual respect
  • Cultural Responsiveness: all education delivered in Spanish and English, honoring cultural values and family realities
  • Community-Led Action: Promotoras identify local needs and co-create solutions with the families they serve

Trust-Building

Promotoras develop authentic relationships based on shared experience, mutual respect, and the deep trust that comes from living in the same communities they serve.

Cultural Responsiveness

All education and support are delivered in Spanish and English and honor the cultural values, traditions, and realities of Latino and immigrant families in Northern Colorado.

Community-Led Action

Promotoras identify local needs and co-create solutions that reflect the priorities of the families they serve — driving change from within the community.

Four Specialized Pathways

Promotora-Led Pathways

Promotoras can grow through four specialized training pathways. Each serves as an entry point while allowing leaders to expand their skills and impact over time.

Cultivando Familias — Early Childhood & Family Well-Being

Promotoras gain tools to support caregivers with early learning, positive parenting, and family engagement strategies that promote healthy child development.

Corazón y Sanación — Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being

Promotoras learn to reduce stigma, support emotional regulation, and connect families with culturally appropriate mental health resources.

Semillas de Liderazgo Comunitario — Leadership Development

The core leadership pathway that builds skills in facilitation, public speaking, advocacy, and systems change.

Raíces de Mañana — Youth Leadership Development

Promotoras help guide youth in exploring identity, environmental justice, and community leadership.
